How The Emergence Index measures what it measures and what it deliberately doesn't.
We measure the rate at which new SaaS products appear within categorized problem-spaces. A launch is recorded when a domain's first SSL certificate is observed in Certificate Transparency logs and the domain exhibits signals consistent with a software-as-a-service product.
A first SSL certificate is a strong but imperfect proxy for a launch. It catches most genuinely new products, but can also flag domain migrations or rebrands by established companies.
When 3 or more companies share overlapping problem descriptions and technology choices, the system initializes a new category. Categories are evaluated daily using HDBSCAN clustering on embeddings from problem/statement pairs for each company. No human decides what is or isn't a category, categories emerge from the data.
We do not score companies editorially. We do not rank based on traction, revenue, team size, or any signal we cannot independently verify from public data. We do not accept submissions, paid placements, or manual curation requests. We do not use the word 'innovation'.
